Fred Schmidt, a four time NCAA Champion and a seven time All-American. In 1965, his final season, he became the 100 and 200 butterfly champion and swam the butterfly leg on the first place 400 medley relay team. In 1964, Schmidt won the 200 butterfly and took second in the 100 butterfly. For the next 12 years, Indiana would crown at least one swimmer an NCAA Champion. Schmidt swam the butterfly events with teammate Larry Schulhef in 1963 and 1964, taking fifth in the 100 and fourth in the 200 in 1963, when Schulhef finished fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. In 1964, Schulhef placed third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
